Backup and moving to a new phone
All data lives on your phone. One backup file keeps it safe – and moves it to a new phone.
1Export a backup
Settings → Your data → Export a backup. PetCare creates a single file named like petcare-backup-2026-10-27.json with everything: pets, medications, dose history, health notes, vets, feeding, documents and photos.
The share sheet opens – save the file to iCloud Drive, Google Drive, Files, or e-mail it to yourself.
Tip: Make a backup now and then, especially before changing phones. Without it a lost phone means lost records.
2Restore on a new phone
Install PetCare on the new phone and enter your name on the welcome screen. Then open Settings – your avatar in the top right corner of My Pets or Today – tap Restore from backup and pick the file.
The app shows what the backup contains (date, number of pets, medications, doses and documents) and asks Restore this backup? Restoring replaces everything currently in the app. If anything fails, your current data stays untouched.
Tip: Straight after the welcome the app shows Add your first pet without a way to Settings. Close and reopen the app – it opens on My Pets with your avatar.
3Turn reminders back on
After the restore, check Settings → Dose reminders and allow notifications on the new phone. The reminders are then planned again automatically.
4Erase all data
Settings → Erase all data deletes every pet, medication and logged dose and returns the app to the welcome screen. This cannot be undone – export a backup first if you might need the data.
